Sderot has a low socio-economic ranking with an average wage of about $1,000. Although major corporations are operating in the city, the 1995 unemployment rate was 20%. As a result of the current situation, the rate has had increased significantly. Only 50% of the
students graduate successfully from high-school.

Sderot is the main target for daily terror attacks from the Gaza Strip. Over 4,000 rockets were launched to civic areas in recent months. Residents in the city suffer from psychological, educational and financial trauma. In the past few weeks only 30% of the students attended schools and the economy got a devastating hit. Still, many residents insist on staying in the city and show strength in the face of a vicious and shameless terror against civilians.

The advancement of education in every town and community in Israel is an admirable goal under normal circumstances, but when the country faces adversity, it becomes essential. At this time, with the town of Sderot under constant missile attack, it becomes our duty to
provide each and every student in Sderot with as normal a learning framework as possible, and to position Sderot’s education system at the top of the agenda.

The following proposal calls for the use of advanced technologies in a way that puts the focus on the students. The
aim is to give them a quality education, one that is both flexible and up to date, while at the same time empowering the local schools so that they can serve as a model for the whole of the Israeli education system. This project offers an innovative, systemic model for
integrating ICT (Information, Communication, Technology) within Sderot’s schools, with the full cooperation of the municipality, the schools and the residents.

To achieve these goals, ILC has established the “Israeli Leadership Club Fund for Sderot”. We thank the Consul General of Israel, Jacob Dayan, for his support and guidance in this important project. The Consul General will be involved in the planning of the fund, will serve as an advisor and will review progress reports.

ILC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that is dedicated to building an involved and active Israeli-Community. Joining forces with the Jewish community, we will ensure a strong support to Israel now and in generations to come.

ILC’s directors are long time contributors. As such, we understand the importance of a clear and clean system of funding. We value every dollar and cent donated and we are dedicated to make sure those contributions support effectively the end goal – the education of teenagers in Sderot and in villages surrounding the Gaza Strip.

ILC does not support organizations. It supports projects. This concept allows us better expense tracking and outcome evaluation. ILC is developing a thorough report system that will be a pre-condition before we fund any project in Israel. ILC Board of Directors will personally review and report the progress of each funded project, including field visits (covered by personal funds).

”Our Sderot”

ILC will join as a partner of the Israeli Government and the Ministry of Education on this impressive project. “Our Sderot” is a seven segment online network that addresses educational, psychological, social, financial and other challenges the city faces. The tools and
content the network provides will allow residents of Sderot to communicate with volunteers around the world and to provide them with a significant support system. So far, various entities have contributed for the project and others have committed to support it.
Supporters of this project include: The Joint, Ministry of Finance, Sapir College, SUN Corporation, “Yadid”, E.D.B. Project, ORT Israel and SNUNIT Online Content Developers.

ILC chose to focus on funding the development and implementation of the segment dedicated to education.

This segment consists of 4 main projects:

a. OFEK is one of the most advanced educational programs in Israel within the formal school system, operating in several schools mainly in Central Israel. In the first phase, we will fund a pilot program in one of the schools in Sderot. Upon success and based on funds
available, we will support expansion of this program to other schools in the area.
Phase 1 is ready to start operating by The Center for Educational Technology relatively quickly within ten classes. Following up this phase we plan on expanding the program. The initial significant cost is invested in advance classroom technological hardware.

b. Homework Assistance Program will be based via online learning at the student home and by volunteers in local computer centers. This program will use the technological advantages to provide support to students while they are forced to stay at home. This will also allow high-quality teachers to provide distance learning assistance. There are several online platforms available for implementation of this program.

c. English Assistance Program is in a response to the current relatively poor results in English studies of Sderot. This crucial program will be based on volunteers in Sderot and on volunteers around the world that will communicate with the students online. ILC will involve
the community and local schools in this project. We believe this project can benefit not only Sderot but also our community.

d. High-School Final Exams (BAGRUT) Assistance Program – ORT Schools, The Center for Educational Technology and CECI are committed to providing free content that supports the preparations for the BAGRUT exams. This project can improve significantly the results in the test and may open future doors for the participating students. The first phase of this project is an asynchronous online support for the students. Phase two will provide the students with one-on-one assistance.
